Two lovely matching pieces of Meissen porcelain dating back to mid 19th century. The porcelain is original by the Meissen factory, decorated by Helena Wolfsohn. She was the most accomplished porcelain decorator of the time, copied by many since. She bought blank pieces from the Meissen factory, which she painted in her Dresden studio in 18th century Watteau or Fragonnard style. Because she bought blanks directly from Meissen, some of the very early Helena Wolfsohn pieces have the original crossed swords Meissen mark in underglaze blue (as seen on the saucer). The AR Agustus Rex mark on the bowl was the trademark of the royal factory KPM, which Helena Wolfsohn's company imitated, but had to discontinue in 1881 after a court order. Both the bowl and the plate are hard-paste porcelain, for which only Meissen had the formula in Europe. Meissen was the first company in Europe to discover the formula for porcelain, which meant Europe no longer had to depend on Chinese imports. They are painted in rich violet blue with beautiful flowers motives and romantic courting scenes. The plate measures 20cm across and the large cup is 11x13cm and 7cm tall.
