On offer today is a wonderful large pair of 19c Chinese deeply carved cinnabar snuff bottles with thier original wooden stands. These snuff bottles and stands were produced in China around c1880 for export. T are many fakes encountered in most everyw you search for good cinnabar items that ones needs to be certain that the dealer knows the difference as well as auction houses and ebay. This pair is guarenteed to be genuine carved cinnabar from the period. The depth of the carving and quality of the workmanship is of a very high order as well as the original fitted wooden stands. These stands were very dirty and over time almost black and after a gentle clean and buff they turned out a gorgeous reddish brown color going well with the color of the bottles. The true color of the carved lacquer is of the deeper red color that is not faked well. The context nature of the scenes the carver picked are simply wonderful, containing 3 figures to each side along with boats (junks), bridges, fences, foliate. water waves, rockery and nicely done Chinese architecture. Both caps are present but one or both the spoons are replacements. The bottles fit perfectly in thier own custom wood stands. Each bottle is signed to the bottom with a raised black lacquer writing and marked 'CHINA'. Condition is excellent with only one bottle having the writing underneath a little messy with what looks like something got between the bottle and the stand. Then just some small scrapes and t to the surface of the lacquer. Bottles are Height 3-3/4" x Width 3" x Thickness 1-1/2", Stands are 2-3/4" Wide x 1-7/8" Deep X 1" High with the overall height of the bottle and stand is 4-5/8". These are the largest pair of cinnabar snuff bottles I have ever owned or held. If you collect snuff bottles or cinnabar, these are definately worthy of any good collection.
