Large Pre-Columbian Narino Pedestal Bowl C.1200 AD Large Pre-Columbian Narino Pedestal Bowl C.1200 AD This is an ancient Pre-Columbian Narino Indian footed bowl from the area of modern Columbia/Ecuador, dating to around 1000-1400 A.D. The red and black negative resist decoration of this piece is usually identified as coming from the Capuli area of the Narino tribal lands. The top half of the cup bears an elongated geometric design in black on red, while the lower half and stem are in black; there appears to have been some painting to the interior, too, but this has mostly worn away. Apart from this surface wear, the piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or over-painting. Black dendrites, or manganese deposits, (which take several centuries to develop), are evident throughout the surface and clearly authenticate the age of this wonderful artefact.
