This is a very high quality soft stone that can be shaped with steel tools. It is tougher than soapstone, but as easy to carve and better for delicate work. It is exceptional quality Pyrophyllite (a partially metamorphosed claystone), and is also called African Wonderstone. It can be shaped with power tools such as router, bandsaw, lathe, etc, and also steel hand tools such as carpenters hand saw, hacksaw, rasp, etc.. It is very dense, homogenous, free of voids, and has strength to hold fine detail. It is machinable to tight tolerances and will withstand heat well when dry. Takes a lustrous polish and finishes deep, even black when unfired. Discoloration visible in some photos is surface stain from storage, and will scrub off. This material has superior carving and shaping properties, and is arguably one of the finest carving stones in the world. Blocks have been bandsawn with square corners, and some blocks have chips or irregular edges - I try to show the irregular portions in the photos and measurements of blocks with irregularities are averaged. This piece weighs 54 1/2 pounds and measures 11" tall by 10" across base by 6" across top byt 6" thick. I offer UPS or USPS shipping for this heavy block .
