Large Sadao Watanabe Print 1972 Signed Numbered w/Frame This is an incredible large stencil print in the style I believe is called katazome on wrinkled (appears to be hand made) paper which I believe is called momi-gami by very well known and listed Japanese artist Sadao Watanabe. It depicts two biblical figures about to cross a river with sheep on each side. It is an early print dated 1972, done on red background, with black, green, tan, and white coloring, and is signed in white ink "48/70 Sadao Watanabe 1972" across the bottom of the print. It is beautifully framed on a burlap background and you can see the original rough borders of the paper - just a super piece! These early original prints are very desirable and this is not a modern reproduction. It was framed by the Mickelson Gallery - a noted Washington, DC gallery. It may have been purchased t, also, but I can find no history of his showing t He was very popular in the DC area at that time. The print itself is huge - measuring 27 1/2" tall by 24 1/2" wide. The frame measures approx. 39 3/4" tall by 34" wide. This was recently purchased from a Charlotte, NC estate and is fresh to the market. Condition is excellent for the print, and the frame has some minor edge wear from handling through the years. This could be easily touched up. You see a lot of Watanabe's work on the net, but this is an exceptional early example with good size. Guaranteed as described. Please see my other listings for a very rare Japanese published book on Watanabe and a Fumio Fujita print, both from the same estate.
