This auction is for a beautiful and unique solid silver cigarette box hallmarked for Birmingham 1944-5, very heavy weighing 562g (including the wood base lining). There is also a historical nautical connection as this cigarette box, it shows the inscription on the front as stating:- "Presented to H.M.S. Glasgow by the Mayor & Municipal Corporation of Port Louis 12.3.46" - to the right of the inscription is the Coat of Arms for the Republic of Mauritius, (Port Louis being the Capital of Mauritius). To the left of the main inscription is the mark showing two clasped hands with the words "Municipality of Port Louis". Presented whilst she was the flagship of the Commander-in -Chief whilst in the East Indies. HMS Glasgow history (via Wikepedia) The seventh HMS Glasgow (21), built on the Clyde, was a Southampton -class light cruiser , a sub-class of the Town-class and commissioned in September 1937. She displaced 11,930 tons and had a top speed of 32 knots (59 km/h). She was part of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet ; she escorted the King and Queen to Canada in 1939. She also took a large quantity of gold to Fort Knox as an emergency reserve. HMS Glasgow saw active service in The Mediterranean, The Far East, The Arctic and home waters. In August 1945 she set sail for the East Indies, where she was the flagship of the Commander-in-Chief. The lid hinges up and down well and freely, there is a small split at the front corner of the lid on the actual seam, but not really noticeable. Also a couple of dings in the lid, I've shown these on the final photo. Dimensions are:- length 18cm; width 9cm, height 5cm, total weight 562g A historical and beautiful piece. Reasonable reserve set.
