Offered for your consideration is an exceptional vintage Norwegian hunting knife from A/S Helle. Though I've collected Helle knives for quite a while, I've never seen this model before. Helle makes outstanding knives and this knife is the finest I've ever seen from them. It's also the largest and is much larger than standard Scandinavian hunting knives. The knife was just beautifully made and really showcases the exceptional quality and craftsmanship that these knives offer. Many earlier Norwegian knives feature blades of laminated steel. In fact, legendary knifemaker Harry Morseth, a Norwegian native, turned to Norway when looking for superior blade steel for his knives. Laminated steel was popular for Norwegian blades as it offered the properties best suited for their primary uses. Norwegian knives were often used for chopping as well as cutting, and the strength of the laminated steel was well suited for this task. Many vintage Norwegian knives are found with dings or mushrooming on their spines from w they were pounded to chop through bone and wood. Most modern fixed blade knives actually come with disclaimers that strongly discourage this practice, but that's just one of the tasks that these knives were expected to handle. The blade on this knife was crafted from triple laminated steel and it is of exceptional quality. The knife has not been used, carried, or sharpened and remains in perfect condition, as does the original sheath. This is a superb example of this fine knife. It was just beautifully made and offers quality, performance, and craftsmanship that's seldom seen in a production knife. The thick blade was ground from triple laminated steel. The blade has a high carbon center sandwiched between two layers of tough 18/8 stainless. The blade is nearly flawless with just a couple light hairlines from sheath wear. It's a brute of a blade that's about as tough as they come. The tang travels all the way through the handle with the end visible in the center of the pommel plate. The bolster is of thick brass and is completely tight and solid. The handle is of beautifully grained dense hardwood, although I don't know what kind. It is rock-solid and the unique design of the pommel helps to provide a solid, comfortable grip. The handle is also in perfect condition with no flaws or defects. The pommel was also crafted from solid brass, as was the pommel stud. These knives offer exceptional control and have an outstanding feel in the hand. They are well-balanced and feel more like a fine custom than a production knife. The blade is 6-3/8" and the knife measures just over 11" in overall length. The sheath is the original and is also of exceptional quality. The design is quite unique with the retainer strap coming over the back of the handle instead of the standard strap that just comes over the pommel. This design protects the finish of the handle while it's on the belt. I've not seen another Norwegian sheath designed in this manner. These sheaths are always of outstanding quality, but this is the nicest and best-made that I've seen. The sheath was laced instead of stitched and features a grommet for a leg tie-down. If you appreciate well made and exceptionally durable knives, these old Norwegian knives are tough to beat. They were designed for hard use and offer performance and durability that few factory knives can match.
