You're bidding on a handsome, large Carlton Ware ginger jar and lid...the pattern is "New Mikado" made circa 1950' excellent condition. Fresh to the marketplace...just acquired at a local estate auction along with another big Carlton jar in red...check our eBay seller's list. Forgive the shadows and reflections in the photos. Height is about 11". Gorgeous, exotic scene of an oriental setting...gardens, buildings, people and animals share the complex, rich tapestry of the front side. The back depicts a nearby island with gardens and pagodas and a magical pair of birds as a focal point. A boat plies the waters of the blue glaze between the scenes. And all with that rich gilding which shows so well on that blue luster. The lid too has complementary decoration along with the bullet-shaped finial. See photo for the marks. Interior glaze is a pearlescent luster. Carlton, the noted English firm, has an illustrious history of pottery as art in the 20th century. The luster glaze with enameling is a signature technique. The condition is excellent with no wear to the decoration or gilding. No chips, cracks or repairs, of course. No scratches. Some gentle crazing noticeable only on the interior and underside.
