Thoroughly cleaned and fully restored, this is a vintage cast iron MORTAR & PESTLE SET as it was meant to look! When this fine heavy-duty cast iron Mortar & Pestle set left the foundry, it was NOT rusty, NOT encrusted with dirt and debris, and allowing for very routine use, once again looks as it did so many decades ago! As useful today as in times past, a substantial Mortar & Pestle like this one was routinely found in the kitchens of better homes, restaurants and hotels for crushing herbs and spices, at local apothecary shops and pharmacies for preparing medicines, at mining companies and assay offices for crushing ore, and in the laboratories of chemical companies for mixing compounds. As a substantial set weighing at just over 5 lbs, this well-made cast iron mortar measures 4 1/2" across the mouth, 3 1/2" high, rests securely, without any rocking or wobble, on its 3" base, and is well-mated to its original 6 3/4" cast iron pestle. This unpainted, Natural Iron Finish mortar & pestle set has been meticulously cleaned for active use or display, and has no chips, cracks, pits, rust or repairs, but does show normal use wear on the mortar interior, and on the large end of the pestle. Neither piece displays any size numbers or manufacturer's Hallmarks, but the mortar itself does display three (3) decorative indentation rings circumscribing its exterior sides, and has an inset exterior bottom ring for increased stability. I would judge that this nicely cast set likely dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Any questions? Please click on the " me " link, following my eBay ID above for FAQ's, or e-mail me.
