Up for auction is a lovely round and quite large sweetgrass basket with a gracefully looped handle, woven by one of the skilled weavers of the Charleston, SC area. When you visit Charleston, you can still see the ladies selling their handwoven baskets of all shapes and sizes. This basket would have been advertised as a display basket or possibly a fruit or herb basket, and was probably sold to a tourist lady in the middle part of the 20th century. The basket is old enough that it has lost its greenish color and turned a light brown with age. It makes a beautiful piece for display, and the looped handle with the broad base combination is quite attractive. It would make an awesome display basket for Easter if you filled it with onyx or ceramic eggs.

The basket, as noted, is quite a nice large size for one of these Gullah baskets, measuring 12" across from handle to handle and 9" deep to the top of the handle. Because of its age, t are a few missing palmetto wraps throughout, although none of the coils are broken through, and the basket still displays beautifully. See photos, as they give a true picture of this basket's condition. This is a beautiful and genuine American folk-art piece and will make a terrific addition to somone's collection of vintage Gullah baskets.
