Up for auction is a beautifully woven large oval Southern pine needle fruit or centerpiece basket. Baskets like this were widely woven throughout the South including many by Native American craftsmen, and this is a really nice one. The basket was made of coiled pine needles bound together with the traditional raffia binding in a fancy split-stitch pattern. The center of the basket is really nice - the basket was woven around a series of four colorful medallions forming the center of the base. The coils forming the oval were elongated to form handles on both sides. This is a nice and finely woven Southern pine needle basket which makes a very attractive piece for display or could still be used for its original purpose if desired. The basket, as noted is a large one for one of these Southern pine needle baskets. It measures a whopping 16" x 11" across, and with a definite depth to it, about 1½" deep. I am pleased to tell you that this basket is in outstanding condition, with no breaks, frays, missing bindings, or any other damage. All of the openweave medallions are still firmly in place, and the rim is intact and undamaged. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. It will make a terrific addition to someone's collection of Southern US pine needle baskets.Additional Notes: I will be happy to provide read more
