You are bidding on a large, fabulous, vintage oval soup tureen that was made by Metlox, a California Pottery Company. Its design is the Provincial Poppytrail Green Rooster. The set measures approximately 15 1/2" long handle to handle, 10" wide and 9 3/4" tall with the top. Without the top, the bottom section stands 4 3/4" tall. The set includes the original matching 9" long ladle. The set is heavy, weighing (unpacked) almost 8 pounds. On the bottom is an underglaze green circular stamped mark that is blurred but reads "POPPYTRAIL BY METLOX, MADE IN CALIFORNIA". I believe that this mark was used in the 50's and 60's. All three pieces are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, fleabites or restoration. The only visible sign of wear is a little very slight minor scuffing on the bottom of the ladle where it rests on the inside bottom of the tureen. There are minor manufacturing imperfections that are characteristic of such pottery. I never noticed before and almost missed a small approximately 1/4" area on the inside of one of the handles that is rough and unglazed. This is shown magnified in the last photo. I believe this to be a manufacturing defect as it is hard to imagine that the glaze would have been rubbed off in this location.
