Sometimes you just know that a souvenir spoon tells a really good story. This spoon commemerates the finding of gold in Last Chance Creek in 1864 in what was to become Helena, Montana. History says t were four miners who had had no luck in their prospecting. They had named this area Last Chance Gulch because if they didn't find gold , they would give up on the whole area. On July 14, 1864, they found gold nuggets and gold dust in their test pits. This became the Last Chance Placer Mine. Today Helena's main street is named Last Chance Gulch and follows the winding path of the original creek. Interesting story! This spoon is sterling and appoximately 5 1/2" long. At the top of the handle is the sun rising over mountains with a river at their foot. Under this are the words "Oro Y Plata". Next you see the word "Montana". The bowl is hand engraved showing two placer miners panning for gold. On the top edge of the bowl is "Last Chance Gulch", and on the bottom edge is "Helena". The spoon is in excellent condition with no dents or dings. It is monogrammed in script on the back of the handle "CD". I do not know the maker of this spoon but you can see the trademark in the accompanying photos. A great collector's spoon if you are interested in mining or western history. The buyer pays $5.50 for priority mail which includes insurance. Happy Holiday Bidding : )
