is a a very "Un-English" looking snuff box, pink enameled porcelain in the Chinese style, with a flower decor in white, green and blue. Only the hinge (brass looking metal with a long oak leave clasp which works well) brings us back to Europe. It appears that in the years which followed the loss of the colonies, the mood was depressed enough to make forget of traditional styles and adopt more daring and unusual artistic tendencies. This was the period of "The Madness of King George" when much went not as usual. Also the foppish behaviour and eclectic tastes of the Prince of Wales may have brought about a brutal change in some styles. 30 years later, Queen Victoria would set things straight... The dimensions are 2.4" x 1.6" x 0.8", and the condition is excellent. No flake or break on the enamel, clasp and hinges work well and the box is in working order. Find another use if you do not snuff. Very unusual piece, neither completely British nor Chinese...
