This is an original iron hand forged bit auger tool from the late 1800's that came out of a Maine Searsport collection. Unsigned. Very long style measuring 20 inches long. Hand forged bit and shaft with original sharply pointed torpedo style contoured grip wooden "T" style handle. Measures 20 inches long and 16 inches across at the handle. Wood is a nice aged white oak and smooth from use. Handle is tight. The bit on this was twisted with extreme skill and the starter threads were handcut. Very precise drill twist transitions into a round iron shaft and handle collar. Used to bore medium holes in wood to receive wooden pegs. It is a rare finishing work tool. Nice twist on auger bit with small hand cut thread starter tip. A true museum piece. It came from a Maine shipbuilding collection. Tool is in excellent and handle shows medium use. This tool saw heavy use and is a late 1800's tool. This is from a collection that I recently acquired in Searsport Maine. Excellent condition and is a museum piece. Nice handforged shipbuilding tool with maritime background. Shipbuilding is the construction of ships. It normally takes place in a specialized facility known as a shipyard.
