Magnificent Late 18 th Century Military Campaign Writing Slope Box A wonderful transition piece between the earlier unreinforced Georgian swan-neck drop-handled military writing slopes and the later highly reinforced and brass-inlaid Regency military boxes. This one has the flush handles of the Regency boxes, plus steel screws holding the brass braces in place and a small brass keyhole (but does not have the brass inlay, brass straps across the top, front and back, nor escutcheon or large ornate key plate of Regency boxes, nor a secret compartment or side drawer), all of which leads me to believe that this box dates to around 1795. (See /writing.html ) Standard 20"X10"X7" size, heavy (11 lbs), dark mahogany (can't tell if it's very thick venner or sold mahogany, which was the norm then). The box has a varnish coat of some sort, although boxes then tended to have a wax coat, but this finish was put on not long afterwards, I believe, as it looks quite old and has a nice patina. Replacement green burlap on the bottom of the box. The mechanism of the lock is missing (very often the entire lock is gone, because someone forced open the locked box), as is the cover for the pen compartment (I can tell you w to get those made, if you are interested), and t is no ink well nor sander (t rarely are, especially the sanders, though reproductions can be purchased). Replacement leather hinges connect the two flaps to the box, under a replacement dark green cloth writing surface with ribbon pulls. Brass hinges appear hand-made, irregularly-shaped. Box is in unusually good condition for a two hundred years plus item that was obviously used in the field by an officer. This is a box for the discriminating collector and military enthusiast. Great gift for a military officer. Good to go for another two hundred and ten years.
