Late 19 th Early 20 th Century Chinese Wooden Hand Carved Human Yoke
Difficult to find well-used Asian hand carved Yew wood yoke. This fascinating piece was placed over the shoulders, the neck fitting in the slot, and aided a person in the pursuit of hard labor, i.e. carrying heavy objects such as buckets. The yoke ends are notched so that items carried will not slip off. This a typical Chinese utilitarian device made famous by the hard work of "Coolies". The shoulder areas are carved to easily fit the human curve and is a typical trait of Chinese yokes including the overall shape. The piece exhibits a lot of wear from use over the whole piece and especially in contact areas such as the shoulders, neck, end hooks and w the arms would have rested over the yoke. Condition is perfect aside from wear from decades of use. Dimensions: 37 inches long, 8 inches wide, 3 ½ inches thick. If you have any questions or require additional information please call me at . In addition to myself this piece has been verified by Fred Gumbart and David Fredericks. Mr. Fred Gumbart is the owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries ) and on . He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations, and he is an official, licensed, and accredited appraiser of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts. Mr. David Fredericks is curator and authenticator of Antiquities Plus in Tucson , Arizona ) and on . His knowledge of Asian art, particularly jades, is equal to any I have seen. His use of microscopic analysis and sequential attribute confirmation in verifying a pieces life history and condition is unique. He is impeccable and at times brutally honest. Refunds will be made only upon receipt by me (within 14 days of buyer's receipt of the item), of a written verification from a major University Department Head or Major Museum Curator from a recognized institution in the appropriate field.
