Rare piece! Lava stone cameo bracelet from the Victorean Era. The stones are carved from lava stone from Mt. Vesuvius. While each stone is its own unique color, they are all natural and come directly from the mountain. Queen Victoria was a fan of lava stone cameos and wore them all the time. Lava stone cameo jewelry was worn by people of wealth. Wearing this jewelry showed that they had been on the "Grand Tour" of Europe. They purchased these items at the shops while visiting the ruins of Pompeii. Many cameos depict women, gods and goddesses. Artists also carved portraits of noble scholars, philosophers and dignitaries of the day. These cameos are more rare and therefore more valuable. This cameo depicts famous scholars, philosophers and dignitaries. Looking at the bracelet we researched and tried to identify the portraits. Below is who we believe the portraits to be but are not 100% positive. Any help identifying these people would be appreciated. From left to right: Sigmund Freud (black), Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare, Mozart, don't know, Leonardo DaVinci (gray), Aristotle (white) There is a small mark under the nose of the first stone where the gold of the clasp left a mark.It is believed that the names of these people had been carved on the back of each stone but the only one that is still legible is VINCI which can be seen with a loupe. (see last photo -- didn't photograph well) I also believe the name of the artist is or once was engraved on the bracelet at one time somewhere within the portraits but is no longer legible although fragments of what looks like letters are still visible in places. Unfortunately I can't photograph the detail on the gold casing with my camera. It's beautiful! The bracelet weighs 28.3dwt This is really a work of art!! A rare find! Only $4.95 to ship. I will pay the cost of insuring it.
