LAZULI – Amnesie. Musea FGBG 4694. French release. NEW CD. Originally issued in 2003. This edition issued in 2006. MEMBERS: Sylvain Bayol, Frederic Juan, Yohan Simeon, Pol Amar, Claude Leonetti, Marc Almeras, and Dominique Leionetti with Alex Clapot, Jean-Luc Imbert, Michael Luitaud, Fabrizio Leionetti, Aline Leonetti, Fred Mathieu, and Narayana. DESCRIPTION: Lazuli are a French band formed in 1998 with an aim to create totally original and unique-sounding music.This is their first official release, Amnesie , originally published in 2003, now reissued on the larger Musea label. Similar to the group After Crying in terms of musical approach, though their styles are surely different. Lazuli mix their love for ethnic and world music with light progressive rock and modern pop. Their sound has also been compared instrumentally and musically to Peter Gabriel’s fourth album. The vocals are quite poppish and modern, yet absolutely great in their moodiness, and compliment the music which draws on ageless influences. The ethnic orientation is strongly supported by a mass of unusual sounds from the four edges of the world via the Leode (mix of a guitar, a synthesizer, and a melodic saw [with a piece of wood]; see the side bar, below), while the intense presence of the Chapman stick adds an extra flavor of sounding obscurity, also present is something called a Warr guitar. The music circle closes with some light electric guitars and distinctive psychedelic percussion work. A very original record indeed from a super-talented new band. SIDE BAR: The Leode was invented and constructed in 1995 (only one exists) by band member Claude Lionetti; being a surprising mix of a guitar, a synthesizer, a melodic saw, and a Martenau wave. This instrument controls a sampling machine and a multi-effect system through a MIDI module. The instrument is designed to be played with only one hand. Lionetti, unfortunately lost the use of his left arm in a motorbike accident when he was young, which inspired its design. All CDs that do not come in an outer packaging wrap are inspected by me prior to shipping. It is not unusual to find small imperfections in the disc, especially on European manufactured CDs; these small imperfections do no effect the play of the disc.
