Leather Eagle Gratacap helmet. 1850s to Civil War era. This helmet is in perfect condition and has not been repaired in any way. The white paint on the top of the helmet is "nicotined" and was painted about 120 years ago over the original red and gold leafed combs. I can just see the oval Gratacap stamp on the back of the brim and the other stampings are consistent with Gratacap helmets of this vintage. Note that the eagle beak and "banner" under it are in perfect condition. As noted on the frontpiece, which reads" Trenton, EFA, JN", this helmet was associated with the Trenton Exempt Fireman's Association. The owner was "J N". The exempt associations generally predate the Veteran Firemen's Associations by a good 25 years and date back to around 1860 - generally. Condition: The helmet is not cracked or chipped and has no wire showing. The cloth liner is all t but is loose in places. The Front is loosely attached and has a 1/4" x 1/4" pice missing at the very top. I would rate it at a very solid 9 on a scale of 10. Shipping and insurance will be $20.00.
