The SMLE MkIII HT Sniper Rifle was produced by Lithgow Small Arms Factory between 1944 and 1946, 1612 were manufactured. They may have seen service in WWII and were used in Korea and later conflicts. The rifle remained in service as the Army sniper rifle untill the adoption of the Parker Hale M82. The Bases. These are bases for the Lithgow Sniper Rifle SMLE MkIII HT. They are as made and have not been fitted to a rifle (They have no trace of solder underneath and show no external wear marks). They have matching numbers 1987. T is some light rust staining on the rear of the front base other than that they are in excellent condition. The screws for mounting these bases are not supplied but are identical to the spring screw from the SMLE butt plate. The fact that these bases have not been fitted caused me to carefully examine their authenticity. The Army ordered 2500 Sniper rifles from Lithgow, less than 1700 were assembled and tfore it is highly likely that t were components left over when the contract was terminated after the end of WW2. In view of their source and after discussing them with a number of knowlegeable people, including the individual who commissioned the only repros known to have been made in Sydney, I am 99% sure they are wartime manufactured originals.
