Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock print Legendary Battle at Sea- triptych 19th Century Figural Prints- The 19th century was a time of great popularity for woodblock prints in Japan. While Hokusai and Hiroshige dominated the landscape print field, artists like Kuniyoshi, Kunisada (Toyokuni III), Kunichika and others were in the forefront of the figural print genre. These stunning prints from the kabuki, daily life, portraits of courtesans and samurai and famous scenes of Japan were hugely popular. New releases by the most famous artists were so anticipated that buyers lined up the morning a print was to be first offered. These beautiful antique prints are treasures from the Edo culture in its most decadent period. From portraits of stunning beauties to scenes of fighting samurai, these prints transport the viewer to another time, a place as compelling as it is unusual to us in the modern world. Comments- A fantastic original 19 th century Kuniyoshi triptych battle scene depicting a legendary battle at sea. Samurai ships are converging and warriors preparing to battle in a fight between warring clans in from the feudal era. The ships are filled with warriors all in traditional armor. Others approach the boats in the water on horseback- an incredible scene. Fantastic original Kuniyoshi samurai battle triptych. A stunning design in good choice for the collector would display. These large format original triptychs make outstanding antique displays in any room. Artist- Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Image size- 29 1/4" x 14 1/2" Condition- With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few small holes at edges, repaired, blends well. Light creases down center of each panel, repaired from reverse. A couple light smudges, center panel.
