A Leila Marie Smith Cocke Oil on Canvas a 19th C portrait of William E. Peters 1829-1906) who was a Professor of the University of Virginia, and, as a Colonel of the 21st Virginia Cavalry, refused to torch the city of Chambersburg, PA to not endanger women and children, and subsequently resigned his commission. The painting is signed L. M. Cocke, 1894. Leila Maria Smith Cocke was a native Virginian born in Pavilion V on the Lawn of the University of Virginia in 1859 to Dr. Francis H. Smith and Mary Stuart Harrison Smith ,who, most unusually for the time, graduated from Wesleyan Female Institute in Staunton, VA, was enrolled at age 16 in New York in the School of Design at Cooper Union, studying with many of the famous art teachers and painters of the day. She was a prolific artist, completing many portraits in her lifetime, dying prematurely in 1899. Gilt framed, 30` h, 25` w. In need of restoration.
