I am very happy to present another very rare early piece of Chicago Great Western Business Car 100 china that was actually made for #100 and Possibly #99 as well and has been FULLY DOCUMENTED. This is not a stock pattern, but rather a special order by the railroad in the thirties - forties and used into the fifties as well. as chosen for service by the president of the railroad.. So being offered is a veryscarce and beautiful Candle Holder ( my only piece, have never seen another) that was produced for CGW Business Car 100. I was informed, that only a handful of candle holders were ordered (made) and apparently not many survived. The center piece (gilt in color0 can be taken apart and stored if you like. The center piece was most likely ordered sometime in the fifties as a replacement to match up with the gold design on the china ware. However, originally I believe that this was a bread & butter plate that was modified (made into a candleholder) as this center piece was added or applied to this modified plate. I am not really sure of the ultimate age of the center holder with a felt bottom, but I am guessing fifties era but not totally sure. I know the RR used them and this modified version was apparently the way the company ordered them. At any rate a great piece in the pattern and the only one I am aware of. The china pattern has no designated name by Lenox (only a production number code as ordered by the railroad) as it was not a commercial item produced for sale as a stock pattern, but, rather it was a specially produced china pattern that was ordered several times for Business Car100. The pattern could have been on this car prior to becoming 100. I am not really sure when this car became 100 but it remained so until the merger with C&N W 1n 1968. Recently the car was then sold to an individual who may actually wish to refurnish it with the original CGW china pattern. Funny how time changes everything. The pattern may have also seen service on Business Car 99 as well, as some CGW historians have suggested. This is the actual china that was used in service aboard the two business cars strictly for VIP - Special guests and arranged meetings with CGW Corporate personnell and the then acting president. This is a stunningly beautiful china pattern and has some very special unique qualities in the color combination in creams and gold with a stunning cobalt band that resembles a belt with a flower design in center. The pattern made by Lenox China Company thirties crest appears on all pieces and was distributed by ''Marshall Field Co''., Chicago with a very special production decorator code (that appears on the backs of all CGW pieces) numbered C337B written by hand in gilt above. That decorator code according to Lenox was applied to denote a special order. The pattern was used during the Burtness period and was pre 1950 (most likly 1931-1948 period. Mr Burtness was then the acting President of the company.Reportedly, the pattern could have been ordered by Joyce and replaced from time to time on a special order basis through Lenox. The pattern has been reported and brought to light by the granddaughter of the CGW President Burtness. This is a very rare and elaborate museum quality CGW business car pattern and not much of this design can be found or located today. Also, myself, a CGW historian & collector I am thrilled to be able to offer this piece of which just looks wonderful in a dining car china CGW memorabilia set up. The colors are bright and vibrant with no chip - no cracks - and is display ready. A wonderful rare addition to any RR Dining Car China/Business Car or Railroadiana china collection. Also worth mentioning is the fact that no CGW dining or business car china has really been brought to light before, and certainly never documented Again, let me emphasize that this CGW Business Car china is authentic and has been documented as the actual china used on business 100 and most likely 99 as well. It also seems that not many pieces have survived. Most of the pattern was broken and discar...
