As part of their expanding “Renaissance Nativity” set, Lenox artists in 1995 created a limited edition of a magnificent hand-painted porcelain bisque elephant, which is now rare, discontinued, and virtually irreplaceable. Originally it was sold in a box with a boy handler or driver; both boy and box are gone. The realistic modeling of the elephant is complemented by masterful painting and gilding in jewel-like tones. This undoubtedly represents the beast that carried the Wise Man Balthazar from Africa. On its belly is an impressed stamp with the Lenox logo in 24-carat gold: “The Renaissance Nativity - LENOX - Lenox 1995 Limited Edition”. This porcelain elephant appears to be in perfect condition. Approximate dimensions, 9” high x 10 1/2” long x 4 1/2” wide.
