Lavis painting from French listed artist Leon Augustin L'hermitte, 1844-1925. He is very well listed, with works selling in the range of $3,000 to $65,000 for larger format items. Art Dimensions: 7.5 inches high x 5.5 inches wide. Executed, signed and dated 1866, this small format 'lavis' painting is a type of watercolor all in shades of black and white. Ink is used to create infinite shades of grey. This is a very technically challenging art form, and this painting is an excellent representation. White paper is prepared, then the ink is mixed with water, beginning with the lighter shades as the base, building in intensity to the deep black shades with layers. The white is applied last with normal watercolors. All of the execution must be done at one sitting, as NO over painting can be done without destroying the previously painted surface. This painting has a triple mat; white in the center with gold fillet molding, cream colored central mat and a grey-green outer mat. The frame is a traditional (but new) small wood molding with an acanthus leaf design. There are two fillet moldings separating the mats and painting.
