Best Basketball Player not in the Basketball HOF PHOTO: Click Image for Larger Preview DESCRIPTION: LeRoy Edwards was one of professional basketball's first dominating big-men. A man before his time, he helped usher in the three-second rule after his only season in collegiate basketball. He also did the unheard of, leaving college early for the professional ranks, fifty years before it became an accepted practice. Sometimes known by the nickname "Cowboy" and other times "Lefty" among others, Edwards was a larger-than-life character both on and off the court. A bruising player at 6-foot-5 (which for the 1930's was still quite tall) Edwards held an advantage over his competitors in that he was agile and very strong. He was very efficient in the post, w he possessed a deadly hook shot with either hand and was an adept passer. Edwards attended Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis, IN before attending the University of Kentucky w he played one season of varsity his sophomore year (after breaking all the Kentucky freshman records while on the freshman team.) That season at UK Edwards was sufficiently dominant that he was named the collegiate player of the year and was later named as one of the top-10 best players in the decade of the 1930's in college basketball.
