Varian, "Timberline" Detail of Large Tree Detail of Signature NOTES ON THIS OFFERING :Lester Varian is most well known for his scenes of Colorado, and especially for his work at high altitude, at or near the timberline of the Rocky Mountains. This fine scene is typical of the dramatic presentations of the artist, similar to those of Lyman Byxbe, Birger Sandzen and Emerson Glass. The artist paid careful attention to the details of these trees, presenting their growth patterns and forms that were shaped by the wind and elements of the mountains. This etching has been hand embellished with very fine pen and ink, possible a crow quill pen. This is in addition to the aquatint in the background and sky areas. We have sold the original etching (unembellished) in the past, and find the extensive additions to it very refreshing.
