LETTER TO MR. J.A.GILKEY FROM WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN, DATED JUNE 7, 1904Written on The Commoner letterhead. WJ Bryan was known as the great commoner. William Jennings Bryan (March 19, 1860 âe" July 26, 1925) was the Democratic Party nominee for President of the United States in 1896, 1900, 1908, a lawyer, and the 41st United States Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson. This letter is quite interesting, discussing candidates with shared views...namely Hearst. T is an acutal typo in the letter..."and have avoided making and argument..." Very good condition. No return on this item. Letter is as follows:My dear Sir:-Your favor at hand. I thank you for the interest that you have manifested in myself and in The Commoner. I have not thought it wise to discuss the relative availability of candidates, and have avoided making and argument in favor of any one person for fear it might be construed as an argument for his nomination as against others. But in answer to your inquiry would say to you, personally, that while I do not know Mr. Hearst's position upon some of the questions, he supported our ticket very loyally in two campaigns and I believe that his sympathies are with the masses, and on some of the questions I am sure that he is strongly in favor of our side.
