Lewis (who was sent out for the purpose of exploring the territory of Louisiana) dated Fort Mandan, April 7th, 1805. At the date of this letter the party, consisted of 33 persons, including Interpreters, Indians, and all in good health--Capt. Lewis does not calculate to complete his voyage within the present year, but expected to reach the Pacific Ocean and return as far as the head of the Mississippi, or perhaps to Fort Mandan before winter--and entertains the most sanguine hopes of complete success.
