I just picked up this beautiful vintage piece of Mexican art pottery, in Iowa no less! The vase is unusually ornately hand-painted, with large florals and geometric detailing . The glazes are very heavily applied in some areas -- particularly in the yellow top areas, and in the cobalt blue organic leaf 'pyramids' that surround the base. A true artisan created this piece -- the craftsmanship speaks for itself. The bottom mark reads 'MEXICO', and below that is what I'm quite sure is an artist's mark (see photo). The mark is hand-painted under the glaze. You can see the reddish color of the original clay on the rim of the bottom. The vase stands 9 1/2" high, and is approx. 6 1/2" in diameter at its widest point. T is no damage to the piece -- no cracks, chips, etc. T is some light crazing, not atypical at all for these pieces, particularly when the heavy glazes are used. While the colors and painting give this piece a good Mexican folk art look, it also has -- in it's own way -- a kind of subtle sophistication that gives it almost a delft or gouda-type of appearance. A great piece. T's NO RESERVE as usual. Thanks for looking, have a great week.
