For your consideration we have here another fabulous hard to find antique object from China being an early 19c Cantonese export faux tortoise shell table snuff box performed in extra high relief. This great table snuff was produced in Canton, China during the height of the "Old China Trade" era around c1830 for export to the West. These snuffs are becoming more and more difficult to procure and ones executed with this context matter of 'Napoleons Tomb' are even tougher to locate especially in this large size and excellent condition. There is no real need for me to go into much dialogue since those of you that would be interested are most likely well informed so I will just cover the imporant points of interest. The size is in the top end which most of these types of snuffs you will see are between 2" to 2-1/2" in diameter and are of the basic design containing Chinese life scenes performed in medium relief where this particular box is 3-1/2" in diameter having super deep relief and undercutting as well as the finest details reaching a depth of 1/4" in relief in areas. The coloring is perfect with no dryed out tan or brownish flat areas but a nice deep dark blk/brown color and when put against the light the thinner bottom section comes alive with color along with a fabulous surface sheen and patina. The top outside edgework is to die for with its alternating single leaf and berry groupings to the very difficult effort of raised relief cursive work to the bottom on a smooth plate. The sides continue with superb workmanship with the bottom area always being in a much lower relief (due to being moved around and the need to sit flat) depicts a very nice relaxing scene of Cantonese village life with again an incredible outside edge boarder with this time a alternating single leaf and flower design. The inside of both top and bottom sections are smooth. Condition is excellent with very little wear having a few tiny repairs to the fence surrounding the site but hardly noticeable and one tiny hairline surface crack which is also barely noticeable just under the center of the fence to the top of the bottom placque and this is mentioned for complete accuracy. Size: Diameter 3-1/2" x Height 1-1/4". In closing, here is a seldom seen opportunity for the collector to aquire an incredible find so good luck and have fun.
