LIE-NIELSEN TOOLWORKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY BRONZE 4 1/2 SMOOTHER, No. 369/500. This plane is no longer available from Lie-Nielsen. Only 500 were produced and all were sold at the end of last year. No more will be produced. As a consequence, it is extremely scarce. The details: In November, I received my LN 4 ½ anniversary smoothing plane. I had hoped to hold onto it for many years and either pass it onto my children or sell it at many times it's purchase price. Unfortunately, as a result of unexpectedly high tax liability, I am having a liquidation sale. And this is the first item to go. I hate to sell it, it is a monster of a plane, weighing over six pounds (significantly more than my Stanley 4 ½). I have not used the plane. I have removed it from it's packaging twice (upon arrival and now for the photos below). All original packaging and items are included. It is number 369. While not one of the first 100, 369 is an interesting number in itself. I have no doubt that mystical qualities have probably been ascribed to the number, but I have no idea what they are (3-6-9, get it, all divisible by 3?). This plane has the added mass and beauty of bronze, and the wide cut of the 4 1/2, which has previously been available only in the cast iron version. Any Lie-Nielsen plane is a top-quality product, but their bronze planes are truly in another class. To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Lie-Nielsen produced 500 of these beautiful planes, and they have declared t will NEVER be any other bronze 4 1/2's made. This plane is sure to increase in value. The best example of this is the bronze No. 9 Miter plane. According to LN, approximately 500 of these were made before production was switched to cast iron because of the difficulty in manufacturing the bronze version. Since that time, these have been listed for sale for over $900, far more than the current selling price of $350 for cast iron. This premium price is due in part to the limited availability, but more so to the unique advantage that the bronze provides for that plane: increased weight. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the bronze planes produced by LN are exceeded in aesthetic appeal only by those produced one at a time by custom plane makers who can command up to $1000 per inch of plane length (no, this is not an exaggeration). While I have not used the plane, others have reported that it "continues effortlessly along the length of the piece to be smoothed. .001" shavings were easily obtained straight out of the box" All the edges on the plane are polished to a mirror finish, the machined surfaces are perfectly true and the cocobolo handles complement the bronze perfectly. "Lie-Nielsen" and "USA" are cast into the bed near the tote, "No 4 1/2" is cast behind the knob, and "2006" is cast prominently on the toe. "1981-2006" has been sharply and stylishly engraved on the lever-cap, and Tom Lie-Nielsen himself signed the plane on the rear of the left cheek (see picture). The box comes with the Anniversary Bronze 4 1/2 seal on the end and is stamped on the bottom with the ship date. Also included is the literature packed with the plane: LN Bench Planes pamphlet; instruction sheets regarding initial use, the cocobolo handles, and bronze metal; and a 25th Anniversary catalog brochure. Of course, it also includes the card completed and signed by Mr. Lie-Nielsen designating the production number of the plane. If requested, I will also include the original shipping invoice. The winner of this auction will need to contact me within three days of auction end. Checks or money orders are preferred, although I gladly accept Paypal.
