This item is a beautiful Bronze Lie Nielsen #9 Miter Plane, with Cherry handles and infill. Those of you who collect or use Lie Nielsen tools know that he stopped making the Miter planes in Bronze quite a while ago. They were discontinued and he switched to iron. As a result, the Bronze miter planes are very rare. In recent eBay auctions Bronze Lie Nielsen Miter planes went for $1025 and $950. This plane is even more rare than those, as this one is an early model/ prototype for the production Bronze miter planes. The differences are that on this prototype, the Lie Nielsen name is on the blade hold down, not the front lip, and also the blade hold down, the front and rear lips, and the rear handle mount are all left in the rough, that is the casting was not smoothed and polished on those parts.

The inside of the body casting is stamped with the number 93, which I am guessing is 1993, the year of production. You can see that in the photos. I think that is about when I bought it. That would place this plane at 15 years old, from the earlier days of Lie Nielsen. T is no box, as it was shipped in a plain cardboard box with no printing on it, and I didn't save it.

[Added 3/17/08]: I called Lie Nielsen Toolworks about this plane and was told it is about 20 years old, and was produced about 3 or 4 years after the company started doing business under the Lie Nielsen Toolworks name. Also someone sent me an email stating they believe the plane is a Lie Nielsen No. 1 Miter Plane, not a 9, but I have no information to verify that yet.

I am the original owner, and have never used the plane. As you can see from the photos, the blade has not been sharpened since leaving the factory. The plane is in excellent general overall condition. T is some minor oxidation on the body and the blade, but that can be polished out if you want to do that.
