C&O freight trains moved merchandise from the northern Great Lakes to the southern tidewater seaports. In 1949, the C&O began its switch from steam to diesel power. During the early 1950s the railroad purchased its first GP-9 from General Motors’ ElectroMotive Division. The locomotive proved so successful that the C&O had ordered a total of 363 units by 1957.
