Presented for auction is the Lionel 17349 NYC General American Milk Car "6581". This milk car is brand new, unrun, and has never been out of its box except to be photographed for this listing. Lionel made this milk car in 2003. This car features a removable roof so the milk tanks inside can beviewed. It has been sold out for years and is only rarely available on the secondary market. From Lionel's official website: "With their unsurpassed level of detail, the first four Lionel General American Milk Cars are already destined to become O gauge classics. These scale-sized cars are now available in four new liveries.Built in the early 1900s, these cars contained twin glass-lined tanks to keep milk cool at about 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Many of these specialized cars saw service through the late 1950s. They frequently ran in passenger trains in order to get the perishable cargo to its destination in the shortest amount of time. The Lionel Milk Cars ride on sprung die-cast metal passenger car trucks and also include sprung buffers just like the prototype.
