Lionel Model Train Collection Lionel 6-18023 Western Maryland Railway steam locomotive and tender. In original packaging. NEVER USED, NEVER ON TRACK. From 1992. Cost when new was $1,750.00. The Shay Steam Locomotive was developed by Lima Locomotive Works which became an important factor in the mining and logging industry. It has a unique drive system that was developed, instead of the usual drive rods connected in large drive wheels, the steam power is transferred in drive wheels that resemble rolling stock trucks by means of vertical pistons and universal gears. Over the years, approximately 3000 shay-type locomotives were built. The Western Maryland Railroad used it to serve the mining operations or Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland.
