Background to the Item and Provenance This item and the others for sale are all part of Lionels 1970ies offering.By this time the company had vastly increased the use of plastics and branched out into designs that were at once more fanciful (like all the spaceship/militaria stuff) or more true to life like a vast panoply of cars from Americas glorious railroad companies. For the first time examples of the Alaskan RR or even a major old player like the Denver & Rio Grande came up. As history tells us this unclear focus between a modellers railway and a toy was part of what led to Lionel's downfall.As part of the anecdotal history - the Rio Grande is the only american railroad to have seriously considered nuclear power as a way to operate trains! This loco was purchased in an estate sale in Flint Michigan. Condition The Loco is in good condition - it has been in storage for a long while and you can see the coupler has minor signs of corrosion on it.
