Lionel 296 Pre-war (circa 1931) Passenger Train Set in Excellent, Professionally Restored, ConditionUp for auction is a Lionel Pre-War 296 Passenger Train Set in excellent, professionally restored , condition. The engine and passenger cars look and work like new. The only signs of its age are a slight amount of barely noticeable tarnish on some of the couplers, and on the brass/nickel trim. The set includes a Lionel Model 253 Electric Type Locomotive, (2) No. 607 Pullman Passenger Cars, (1) No. 608 Observation Car, and (1) No. 068 Warning Signal. The locomotive and cars have orange stickers on the bottom "Refinished Tin Plate". The set is painted in Lionel's original apple green (Stephan Girard) colors, with dark green carriages, cream colored windows, and nickle/brass trim. Based on my research, I believe this set was manufactured no later than 1931, which was the last year of production for the 253 engines with the manual reverse switch.The Model 253 Electric Type Locomotive works perfectly, and runs strongly and smoothly in both directions. It has all new drive wheels, and the original fiber drive gears have been replaced with an excellent set of reproduction brass drive gears which are much more durable than the originals.
