Actually a pretty decent condition prewar locomotive. There is minimal paint scratching/chipping and no evidence of it having been dropped. As far as running; I put in on my layout and applied the current, it grunted and the wheels moved (a little) so with some maintenance it could become fully operational. It is not without problems/mysteries. The locomotive has no drive rods, they are a very simple 1 piece affair and are purely decorative and why they are gone is the mystery. My research has found that the rear wheels should have a stud around which there is a bushing that the drive rod rests upon and held by a screw. There is no stud and from my research it does not appear it should be a part separate from the wheel. So what happened; did the previous owner remove the stud? did Lionel make it without drive rods? The locomotive also has no backhead and does not appear to have ever had one. From the best I can tell from photographs some 1688/1688E locomotives had backheads and some did not. Could it be that Lionel made the locomotive for some special reason? I certainly do not know. The locomotive is a project, but a doable, yet challenging one. The tender has no whistle and is numbered 1689T. Please see my American Flyer project locomotive currently listed. Item will be well packaged and shipped in a custom made cardboard read more
