Daniel Ridgway Knight

"Fall near Paris"

An extraordinary find, from an early period in Daniel Ridgway Knight's career, an early watercolor from when he first started studying in Paris in 1861. It is a more simple composition with tonal colors, and the wonderful shades of fall.

Ridgway Knights'' watercolors range in price upwards of $50,000, but many of them reflect his later talent for painting complicated and colorful scenes with a profusion of flowers and a beautiful young girl. This watercolor reflects more of what Ridgway Knight studied in his early years in France, the quiet village life, and the truth in what he saw. It was probably painted from life, for it is on heavy paperboard, something an artist would take with him in the field.

Not a whole lot of watercolors survive from Ridgway Knight's early years in France prior to his marriage, so even with the serenity of the scene, this remains an exciting find.

The dating is easily done in the early signature. Ridgway Knight had many variations on his signature, even later in life. But the scrolling version is typified with his early pieces, as is the initial only signature, which is never seen on later works.

Also rare, the painting seems to be in its ORIGINAL FRAME!

At some point, as is common, the painting was backed with wood, and one can see the burn mark to the center of the board from the acid in the wood. Paperboard remains in good overall shape, with no losses or crumbling.

Condition Report:

Acid burn to back of board, not affecting the front. Minor losses to frame.

Size:

14 1/4" wide by 10 3/4" high (painting alone)

Frame 23 3/4" wide by 19 3/4" high.
