Lithium metal 11 grams Sample in 2 Ingots This auction is for one big size and a smaller-sized Lithium metal ingots 99.9% purity weighing a little more than 11 grams cut from a large rod. This fascinating pieces of metal are offered wetted in mineral oil & sealed in polyethylene films just to store the metal temporarily until its use. For displaying in an element collection, or just for using in lab experiments a 11g quantity of lithium metal makes more than good enough quantity for collecting and even for a chemistry hobbyist as this being the lightest metal in the universe - see the photo below to have an idea of the dimension of a 11g quantity of this metal) A data sheet containing specifications and characteristics of lithium metal will be included within the package. Properties of Lithium : Symbol: Li Atomic Number: 3 Atomic Weight: 6.941 Density ( 20 °C ): 0.531 g/cc Melting Point: 180.5 degrees C Boiling Point: 1336 degrees C Lithium is a light silvery-white metal soft enough to be cut with a knife although harder than sodium and the hardest of the alkali metals, ductile & malleable, chemically quite reactive that exhibits a nice silver shiny color when freshly cut but tarnishes rapidly when exposed to the atmosp and forms a grey dark coating on its surface with formation of a mixture of various compounds, specially the nitride. The metal resist further deterioration and can be stored indefinitely if sealed in an airtight container keeping it away from moisture. Also differencing itself from the other alkali metals, lithium reacts with nitrogen, even at ordinary temperatures, to form the reddish brown nitride, Li 3N. It reacts very vigorously with cold water (although not as violently as the rest of the alkali metals) with evolution of highly flammable hydrogen gas which does not ignite like the reaction of sodium or the other alkali metals with water. This results in the formation of soluble lithium hydroxide which is a strong corrosive base. When normally ignited in the flame lithium burns with a red-carmine light (similar to burning strontium) although if heated strongly it will burn emitting a beautiful brilliant white light (similar to magnesium) Lithium is the lightest of all solid elements (having a density half the one of water) and the first of the alkali metals in the Periodic Table sharing the group with sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium, thus the metal reactivity increasing in this order from lithium to cesium, lithium results being the least reactive alkali metal. Lithium ranks 35th in order of abundance of the elements in the crust of the earth. It does not occur in nature in the free state but only in compounds, which are widely distributed. Uses The metal is used as a deoxidizer and to remove unwanted gases during the manufacture of nonferrous castings. Lithium vapor is used to prevent carbon dioxide and oxygen from forming scale in furnaces in heat-treating steel. Important compounds of lithium include the hydroxide, used for bonding carbon dioxide in the ventilator systems of spacecraft and submarines; and the hydride, used to inflate lifeboats, and its heavy hydrogen (deuterium) equivalent.
