You are bidding on a fantastic original Signed Offset Lithograph, with Important Museum Provenance Collection, by French Master Artist JEAN-LOUIS FORAIN (1852-1931). This print is the first of a few images from the Collection of THE SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART that were sold to benefit their acquisitions fund. Good Luck Jean-Louis Forain (October 23, 1852 - July 11, 1931) was a French Impressionist painter, lithographer, watercolorist and etcher.Forain was born in Reims, Marne but at age eight, his family moved to Paris. He began his career working as a caricaturist for several Paris journals but wanting to expand his horizons, enrolled at the École des Beaux Arts, studying under Jean-Léon Gérôme as well as another sculptor/painter, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.In 1891 Forain married the painter Jeanne Bosc with whom he had a son, born in 1895.Forain was greatly influenced by Honoré Daumier plus friend and artist, Edgar Degas. He participated in four Impressionist exhibitions between 1879 and 1884. In his later years, Forain created numerous scenes of the Law Courts and other Parisian institutions plus social satires on late 19th and early 20th century French life. In 1931, shortly before his death, he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. An etcher as well as a painter, Forain depicted domestic scenes, café life, theatrical performers, and dancers. After studying briefly with Jean Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Forain helped defend Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. He supported himself as an illustrator and portraitist, and began etching about 1875.Forain shared an interest in modern themes with the realists and the impressionists. He frequently joined Edouard Manet's discussion circle at the Café Guerbois and established a close relationship with Edgar Degas. Adopting an impressionist style in 1879, Forain exhibited with the group at its independent shows in 1879, 1880, and 1886. After 1900 Forain became increasingly devoted to Catholicism, as is reflected in his religious subject matter and somber palette.
