Thomas L. James was U.S. Postmaster General under Presidents Garfield and Arthur (1831-1916) and a noted journalist and banker. Great content in autographed letter signed "Thos. L. James", 2/3p, 8vo, on engraved stationery of the Lincoln National Bank, New York, June 19, 1893. One day prior to the official verdict of the Lizzie Borden trial, he writes to George W. Turner, publisher of the NY Reporter, "As one of the "Recorder's Special Borden jury, I find the prisoner at the bar, Miss Lizzie Borden, Not Guilty." Apparently, the Reporter had asked twelve of New York's prominent citizens to follow the trial and give their verdicts. The next day, June 20th, the actual jury did acquit Lizzie Borden.Age-toned, otherwise, excellent condition.
