Thisis an entire letter from Thomas Hewat at the Provincial Bank of Ireland in London to Henry Waterhouse of London and is dated 7 th March 1855 . The letter is an advice of Henry Waterhouse that he has been successful in his application for a position with the Bank and will be employed on one month’s trail. After this trail he will be required to provide £1,000 of surety. In respect of postal markings the item has several red blurred tombstones together with a penny red stamp cancelled by an octagonal numeral ( 14 ). I am not an expert on postal markings and this item is in my collection of bank memorabilia. Letters from this bank are not particularly common and letter from any bank which incorporate content such as a job offer are much sought by collectors. The Provincial Bank of Ireland was founded in 1825 and I would refer the reader to Banking in 19 th Century Ireland for background info (the book is part readable on line). Earlier this year I sold a letter from this bank which was dated 1843 and told of the poor management of the Clonmel branch of the bank. The following are extracts from the previous letter . “As Mr Hewat will, in person, report to the Directors the state of affairs at this office ~ it, therefore, is unnecessary for me to enter, at any length, upon the subject in this letter.
