On offer here is a rare signed volume, with two signed accompanying letters: London. Being a comprehensive survey of the history, tradition and historical associations of building & monument s arranged under streets in alphabetical order, by George Cunningham. Published by J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd., 1927 (1 st edition). Hardcover, 887 pages (including extensive index). This comprehensive volume is arranged by streets in alphabetical order, then by house numbers. Details of famous previous residents historical events & associations are given. A fascinating read! Two factors make this volume of particular interest. Firstly, it has been dedicated by the author (dated Oct 15 1927) to the front endpaper. Secondly, loosely laid-in are two typed and signed letters from the author to a Mr Rowe. Both with the letterhead: “George H. Cunningham, Valley Cottage, N.Y.” The first, dated Dec 4 th 1926 is written from Paris. In it h e mentions his soon-to-be published book. The second is dated May 5 th 1927, written from Venice. He mentions a serious illness which he had suffered from, and also delays with publishing the book. Presumably the book on offer here was once the possession of Mr Rowe. A fascinating glimpse into the writer's life and character! Red cloth boards, gilt titles and decoration.
