~ Voodoo Priestess Estate ~ "Look Into My Eyes" Alexander Backer Chalkware Main Ballroom Lounge Find ~!~ Just over six & a half years ago we were called to do the estate that had been closed up for seventeen years! Voodoo Estate! This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. Located in Florida, t was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting & in we went. If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with! Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background. The home had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist, grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, & favored daughter of a Marie Glapion. This did not have much impact on us other than to cause an uneasy feeling when in the house & we declined to spend the night while inventorying, deciding to stay in a hotel to return during daylight. Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed & was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's. We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics! Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home I have ever been in & some of the items found inside were a little more than unnerving. T was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the home, however t was quite a bit of contraband & other items we can not sell on ebay. These are some of a few pieces from this estate we will be listing today, so check our other items ! We will, upon the winning bidder's request, issue a named Letter of Authenticity with each piece from this estate, complying with the terms set forth to us by the estate's attorney. Back To The Auction Found shelved behind the bar in the serving area of the Main Ballroom Lounge. "The Ballroom Lounge" A large bar type lounge located off of the main ballroom which contained an ornate thirty foot long commercial bar of late 1800's, New Orleans origin (yes we already sold it). Fully stocked with artifacts everyw this was a lounge to behold.Picture a dimly lit cherry wood paneled & maple floored room with matching booth fixtures along the walls & additional seating for forty. And all this was just for the lounge!The hand ground & etched amethyst & cobalt glass mirrors we sold as salvage still causes remorse...~!~ But Back to the Figure T is no journal or inventory mention of this lot that we have been able to attribute. This is unfortunate, as we have found very little real information about the manufacturer, other than what is obvious. "Experts" have placed it from the late 1890's to the mid 1960's. From the look of it & our limited knowledge of these plaster figures it is hand painted chalkware, circa 1930. Having been looked upon by a long list of actor's musicians, celebrities, Erol Flynn, Maya Deren, James Edwin McTeer, Jr., Screaming Jay Hawkins, just to a name a few. These persona mingling with multi-cultural traditional & alternative religious leaders over a five decade period we can only look back & imagine being t Apparently this was a whimsical piece of decor used with levity on those who had imbibed. Typical wear & tear as shown. Approximately 7 3/4" x 6 1/8" x 3 3/8". We have only encountered two other such pieces in our illustrious career making it an increasingly harder to find collectible with an extraordinary provence that is much nicer than the photographs are able to depict. ~!~ We have been contacted & visited by a number of people who were interested in the items from this estate since our first batch was listed.
