GERARDO LOPEZ, one of the TAXCO maestros, made this beautiful set. The deeply colored glass "stones" are close to garnets in hue, but in some light you can see more of a purple cast, reminding me of amethyst; I've included several different pictures to try to give you a good idea of how changeable the color is, and how it responds to changes in light. The combination of scrolls and beads is classic Lopez design, and it invites the eye ever onward, as the light rolls from link to link. Fantastic. It's easy to understand why, according to Mexican Silver, by Morrill and Berk, his store was "recommended in a 1956 guidebook as being among the 'best silver shops' in Taxco." The links in both the necklace and the bracelet are 1 1/4" long and 5/8" across at their widest point. The cabochon stones are just under 1/2" in diameter and rise about 1/8" from the background. The necklace is 15 3/4" long and the bracelet is 6 3/4" long. Both pieces are in excellent condition -- the clasps hold firmly, the glass is clear and unchipped, and the silver has only the usual faint surface scratches. I noticed that one of the little silver beads on one link of the necklace is flat on top, and I have to assume that it was done in the making; any blow strong enough to flatten the silver would surely have damaged the stone that's right next to it. T are a couple very small surface imperfections on two other beads on that same link -- again, I think it dates to the making, and none of it detracts in the slightest from the look of the link. According to Bille Hougart's The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks, this mark (please see the close-up, below) came into use by Lopez in 1955. What's intriguing is that the eagle #26 is used on the necklace, and #23 appears on the bracelet; both numbers were used by Lopez. Thanks for looking, and for reading so far!
