Gilt ruling in triplicated to both the front and back boards. Elaborate gilt dentelles. TEG. Marbleized endpapers which remain free of Ex Libris plates and markings. Contrasting crimson leather spine label, which remains bright. Publication date gilt stamped to foot of spine. Binding is solid and is in MINT condition. Mint condition. 261pp. Text remains clean. Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, 1809 1892, was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and remains one of the most popular poets in the English language. In 1842, while living modestly in London, Tennyson published two volumes of Poems, the first of which included works already published and the second of which was made up almost entirely of new poems. They met with immediate success, unlike his previous publication over ten years previous. It was in 1850 that Tennyson reached the pinnacle of his career, finally publishing his masterpiece, In Memoriam. Later the same year he was appointed Poet Laureate in succession to William Wordsworth. Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter, ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature, as source material for his poetry. Idylls of the King is a cycle of narrative poems which retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, following the rise and fall of Arthur and his kingdom. The whole work recounts Arthur's attempt and failure to lift up mankind and create a perfect kingdom, from his coming to power to his death at the hands of the traitor Mordred.
