BLUE STIPPLE DUCK SUGAR SHAKER ~ N.S. GUSTIN, LOS ANGELES POTTERY Description: This auction is for a blue stipple hand painted duck sugar shaker produced by N.S. Gustin in the 1980's. It stands just under 8" tall and is approximately 3" in diameter. The shaker is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or manufacturing flaws that I can find. The rubber stopper fits snugly and the five holes in the top are open so the sugar will flow freely. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In the 1980's I purchased a very large number of the hand-painted N.S. Gustin and Los Angeles Pottery blue stipple & spongeware items from the Pottery Shack in Laguna Beach, CA. Each week when the truck arrived from the factory I was t looking for new additions to the collection. The vast majority of the pieces were used as display items either in my home or in my catering business; they have received very little use as they have been packed away since the early 1990's. At this point, I am selling some of the accessory pieces from this chicken and duck stipple collection as they are too fragile to be used in my current business. They matched my country home and catering needs, and I paid no attention to anything regarding their value, manufacturer, etc. I thought the collection was spongeware in the tradition of the early colonists, but internet research reveals that apparently these items are considered to be stippleware. Some of the items say Gustin on them, some only have artist's marks. Since I am not an expert on any of this, I have listed the items as stipple, spongeware, N.S. Gustin and Los Angeles Pottery (who purchased N.S. Gustin at some point in time but I do not know when). I trust that those of you with far greater knowledge than I have will be able to figure out the particulars regarding this collection!
